Adelaide Uni Bar
17th October

Comeback Kid, a band spawning fans both new and old with their already massive 14 year career was set to headline the Adelaide Uni Bar on Friday the 17th of October in support of their latest release ‘Die Knowing‘. With this show being the first time this reviewer has experienced the caliber of their live performance, it is no question that they deserve every ounce of success they have earned. Bringing along Rotting Out from Los Angeles and Relentless out of Sydney, The night was set for the plethora of tough riffs and throwdowns.

Opening the night, local Adelaide hardcore band Reactions demonstrated they were more than capable of setting the nights standard, opening with their newest song ‘Guilt Trip‘ and playing a set largely comprised of material from their debut full length (due to be released next year). They brought the best Adelaide has to offer in terms of a raw and unrelenting musical ferocity. Fulfilling the mosh needs of a fair few early punters, Reactions are one of the bands to keep on your radar for the coming year.

Up next were hardcore punk band Starvation, featuring members of bands such as The Weight and Stolen Youth, this band truly embodies old school hardcore DIY work ethics, with no online presence except for their debut LP on bandcamp. I was left open to interpret their sound and energy without bias, and to that extent I was pleasantly surprised. Intense is the only accurate way to describe Starvation’s stage presence, a manic look on the face of the vocalist and visceral scream to boot. Starvation are definitely worth checking out if you have the chance at another local show.

Third to last band on the bill and first of the tour package was Sydney based Relentless. Quickly demonstrating the difference between a touring and local band when it comes to tough stage presence and music, yet again bumping the level of the nights intensity up a gear and rightfully so with this being the bands first Adelaide show in two years. Playing both current, new and old tracks alike whilst announcing towards the end of their set that a new record was on the way and due to land in 2015.

Second to last band on the bill, all the way from America for their first ever Australian tour from the city of Los Angeles was Rotting Out. The crowd erupted for songs such as ‘No Clue‘ and the cover of ‘In My Eyes‘ by Minor Threat. Despite the long breaks between songs (no doubt the incredible jet lag taking its toll, not to mention being a man down due to legal difficulties) the band and more specifically the front-man Wally performed in a manner that could be described as nothing short of ballistic, spending the majority of the set on the barricade to bring about a connection between the band and fans that had otherwise not been seen in the bands before.

Finally the headliner, Comeback Kid, the band that everyone came to see. Not only was this was my first time experiencing the bands live show but hearing their music also and what I witnessed was beyond phenomenal. Tight musicianship and a presence that is generally reserved for bands that are headlining stadiums. Comeback Kids enthusiasm was electric. Playing songs new and old, they ended the show how any hardcore show should end. I’m sure we’ll be seeing them back within the next year.
