After spending many years on stage with Conation, Fear Like us and A Death in The Family, Jamie Hay set off to crave out a name for himself with his solo work. Jamie has been playing shows all over the country for the past few years and released his debut 7 inch ‘Thieves’ back in 2010. Since that release, Jamie has been hard at work writing new material and has just release his new full length album ‘King of the Sun’ on which a handful of absolute legends joined the great man to play on the record. With Jamie just about to head out on the road with Lincoln Le Fevre to launch the new album, we are honoured to have Jamie Hay as our Band of The Month for November.

Newcastle’s favourite adopted Melburnian JAMIE HAY has been dedicated to music for a vast portion of his life. From house shows, to huge festivals, international tours and regional youth centres, Jamie Hay has seen it all. He now opens a new chapter, with debut solo album KING OF THE SUN (out November 02) and a tour to accompany it.

The ire-filled front man of politically wrought Novacastrians CONATION, Jamie took up shared vocal/guitar duties with punk rock royals A DEATH IN THE FAMILY on relocation to Melbourne several years ago. Between touring the world and leading acoustic shout-along folk-punkers FEAR LIKE US, Hay slowly began crafting solo tunes a few years back after he paired with fellow frontmen gone solo-ists Darren Gibson (Lead Sketch Union) and Donnie Dureau (Blueline Medic) to form Tyre Swans. His only solo release to date is 2010’s much-loved THIEVES 7”.

King of the Sun was recorded in the midst of a Tasmanian winter with friend and fellow performer Lincoln Le Fevre. A swag of friends were invited to contribute, including Matt Bodiam (A Death in the Family), Adrian Lombardi (Blueline Medic), Carl Burnett (Arrows) and Liam White (The Scandal). King of the Sun is family affair, a community of friends chipping in, the kind of community Hay was borne out of. The release of this album has a similar philosophy; tiny Adelaide label Hobbledehoy Records (who released the Thieves 7”) will present the album with all due love and dedication.

Jamie Hay is a passionate songwriter, an earnest man whose values and experiences are communicated through his music. King of the Sun as a volume explores stories of courage, resilience, heartbreak and tragedy, exhibiting that familiar ‘battler’ mentality and touching on the bitterness of a hard yakka existence. The instrumentation is varied, between a myriad of guitars there sometimes lies pedal steel, mandolin and banjo. It’s all stitched together by Hay’s brusque voice and an underlying, unquenchable optimism.

Jamie Hay introduces the country to his record on tour alongside Lincoln Le Fevre from October to December. The thrill of spontaneity permeates every set; but there’s sure to be smiles, truthful remunerations, some fists in the air and of course that voracious voice that could only belong to Jamie Hay.
