TROPHY KNIFE – TRAPPED IN THE GRADGE

It doesn’t matter where you live in the world, or how old or young you are, Cartoons are enjoyed by everyone. Over the last twenty years there have been huge developments in the animated word that have seen cartoons be turned from a kids entertainment device through to serious adult entertainment. These days anything can be made into an entertaining cartoon and boundaries are pretty much none existent as South Park and Family Guy have proven. This has also seen the scaling back of other kids programs that had puppets and people in costumes that once reigned supreme on morning TV. One of these shows was Teletubbies, which was recently made a mockery of by Melbourne metal band Trophyknife as part of a video clip for one of the tracks off their latest EP, Trapped in The Gradge.

Trophyknife have been a dominating force in the Melbourne metal scene for a longtime now. They first hit the stage back when they weren’t even old enough to be allowed into a licensed venue without their parents by their side. As extremely impressive as they were at this time, they managed to transform themselves into one of the most exciting bands in Melbourne with the release of their debut EP ‘Just Remember we All DIe’. Their take on technical metal was like a slap to the face and with their latest EP ‘Trapped In The Gradge’ the band has pushed themselves in a slightly different direction, throwing in some stoner rock riffs while still ripping our the death metal to let you know that they can still shred like madmen.

Starting things off a lot slower that we would expect from these guys, ‘So Many Painkillers’ is a great intro and build up track to get things rolling. After the few minters of slow doomy riffs wind up and things get cracking, out jump the sounds of Trophyknife that long time fans of the band would be familiar with. From here we head to something a little different for the band with ‘Longer Days’. The riff in Longer Day is all sorts of amazing, and after one listen, it will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day. It’s catchy, yet heavy, and unleashed some brutal vocals. For fans of the bands last EP, there is ‘Enslaved’ which heads back to a style that you would be more familiar with before racing into a killer GG Allin cover.

This recording is a big step up sound wise for the band compared to their last EP with everything coming out sounding massive. The tone on that guitars cuts right through the mix, and listening to the drumming throughout this record is an absolute pleasure to listen too. Vocally, this is a very heavy record. Mixing up his styles between the doom and death metal parts, the singer has managed to nail each section and provide us with an additional melody that works with the guitar to proceed a massive wall of brutality.

Infusing the doom sections with the death metal, and making it flow well and sound interesting is no easy feat. Yet, this record flows seamlessly and with the onslaught of amazing riffs, you won’t have a chance to be bored. Even though this EP is only four tracks, this recording exceeds the 20 minute mark and will leave you craving more. The way the band has released this EP, as a digital download with a sticker, has proven to be popular amongst fans with everyone getting a killer deal. If you are yet to see this band live, get out and see them next time they are in your town and prepare to be shredded all over!
