MILESTONES – IN TIME, CLARITY YOU’LL FIND
Reaching a milestone is probably one of the most defining times and feelings a person can experience in their life. That point when you hit a goal or achievement that really makes you look back on everything to that point an realize that it was all worth it, and every regret and bad decision up to that point seems to turn into experience, knowledge and new perspectives. In the case of Brisbane band Milestones, and the hard work and dedication that has culminated in the release of their debut album “In Time, Clarity You’ll Find”, the band have definitely reached a milestone of their own that is well worth celebrating.
The name Milestones is definitely a name that should be familiar to punk rock fans across the country. Since the release of their debut EP, Growing Up Is Getting Old, a solid effort in it’s own right, the band have become an absolute work horse and have tirelessly found themselves playing a seemingly endless list of shows an tours with some of the best bands from around the country and around the world (Fireworks, The Wonder Years, No Trigger, Such Gold, Cruel Hand, Man Overboard, Headaches, Skyway, Heroes For Hire, Break Even, The Amity Affliction, Tonight Alive, Fires Of Waco… The list just becomes ridiculous). Now, the band have somehow managed to step things up tenfold with the follow up ‘In Time, Clarity You’ll Find’ and if this record is anything to go by, things will not be slowing down.
The major thing that has always appealed to me about Milestones is how broad the band’s spectrum is (Just look at the bands they play with) and that diversity has really shined through on this record. The band have put a little bit of their earlier pop-punk influences behind them, and have really latched on to a sound a little more akin to the 90′s emo/punk rock influences that band truly love. It’s because of this that “In Time…” will find it’s way onto the playlists of a lot of people who may not have checked the band out before, or maybe didn’t totally feel the band’s earlier work. With that said, pop-punk faithful should fear not, because Milestones are still just as catchy and in your face as ever.
Getting straight into pace with opening track, the chest pounding ‘(Wasted) Youth’ and intricately weaving it’s way through to acoustic closer and dead set heart-breaker ‘My Apology’, Milestones have pulled out all the stops and inventively and effortlessly go from fast to slow and soft to heavy in total style. Your first listen will keep you completely enthralled and keep you guessing as to where each song will go. It’s obvious that a lot of thought has gone into the way the tracks on this record have been arranged, and also into the way the songs have been topped off with the clever and honest lyrical rasp of Josh Bellchambers, delivered with complete sincerity.
Crafted at Brisbane’s Studio 454, the production on the record is great, with nothing too over the top, and everything sounding very natural and honest to the bands live sound which is always a good move!
‘In Time, Clarity You’ll Find’ is kind of like listening to a really good mix-tape given to you by boy or girl you liked in high school and that feeling you got when you when in between the Hot Water Music, Thursday and Brand New tracks that all your friends were listening to, he or she had put an amazing song by a band you’d never heard before on it, we’ll say “Gloria” by Mineral for nostalgia’s sake, and it just made you like them more!
